Scientific advances and the end of tuberculosis: a report from the Lancet Commission on Tuberculosis

In expectation of the second UN General Assembly High-level Meeting on the fight against tuberculosis that will be held on 22 September 2023, the Lancet Commission on tuberculosis has just published an update to its last report dating from 2018: Scientific advances and the end of tuberculosis: a report from the Lancet Commission on Tuberculosis.

The Lancet Commission on TB includes among other renowned experts the two TB-CAPT principle investigators A/Prof Helen Cox (University of Cape Town) and Prof Claudia Denkinger (Heidelberg University Hospital).

The 2023 version of the Lancet report summarizes how the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a deterioration in the achievement of the End-TB goals. While the world has seen a constant decrease in TB mortality rates over the last 20 years, the number of TB deaths increased from 2019 to 2021 by 14%:

In response to these new challenges the Lancet Commission on tuberculosis suggests a new set of scientifically validated strategies and tools to encounter TB in the future.

The Commission outlines the high economic cost of inaction and calls on the global community to dramatically increase funding for the fight against TB.
